Welsh Lymph Node Research Hub, Driving Regional Excellence & National Collaboration
As Co-Lead of Lymph Node Research UK (LNRUK) and Lead of the GW4 Lymph Node Research Consortium, I have establishment of the Welsh Lymph Node Research Hub, a dedicated, multi-disciplinary regional hub designed to advance translational immunology across Wales, connect directly with partner national and international research institutions.
A Comprehensive, Multi-Disciplinary Community
The Welsh Lymph Node Research Hub brings together an integrated working group that spans the entire spectrum of biomedical and clinical science. Our membership unites researchers and practitioners working across key immunological paradigms, including:
- Infection, Virology & Bacteriology: Unraveling host-pathogen interactions and tissue-specific immune responses within secondary lymphoid organs.
- Inflammation & Immunotherapy: Designing novel therapeutic interventions for autoimmune conditions and chronic inflammation.
- Vaccinology & Immunisation: Evaluating local lymph node dynamics to enhance vaccine responsiveness, persistence, and adjuvant design.
Bridging NHS Partnerships & Career Stages
Built on a strong clinical foundation, the Hub is based at Cardiff University and partners with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, creating a seamless bridge between discovery science at the laboratory bench and clinical application at the bedside.
Our working group reflects an inclusive, cross-disciplinary structure:
- Academic & Clinical Spectrum: Uniting laboratory wet-lab scientists, bioinformaticians, translational researchers, and NHS clinicians.
- Career Development: Providing a supportive ecosystem with active representation ranging from Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and post-doctoral fellows to leading Professors and NHS Research Leads.
Strategic Vision & Impact
Meeting quarterly, the Welsh Lymph Node Research Hub working group serves as a central engine for research coordination and strategic growth. Our mission focuses on four key pillars:
- Strategic Research Direction: Aligning regional expertise to target priority funding calls, clinical trial development, and major collaborative grants.
- Fostering Cross-Institutional Collaboration: Breaking down silos across academic disciplines, health boards, and research institutes to drive interdisciplinary breakthroughs.
- Industrial Collaboration & Innovation Growth: Accelerating commercial development and economic growth across Wales and the UK by cultivating strategic partnerships with biotechnology, imaging, and pharmaceutical leaders. These industry alliances drive co-funded experimental trials, technological commercialisation, and rapid translation of discovery science into real-world diagnostics and therapies.
- Maximising UK and International Wide Impact: Serving as a vital regional anchor that links Welsh research excellence directly into the broader UK Higher Education Institution (HEI) network via LNRUK and the GW4 Alliance with international partners.
- Capacity Building & ECR Growth: Providing mentorship, specialised technical training, and leadership opportunities for early-career researchers and clinical academics.
